Poppy survives in a collapsing shack after her parents died rescuing strangers, enduring daily torment from classmates while adults ignore her. A Christmas Eve typo routes her letter to Satan instead of Santa. The Devil dispatches Cerberus, stripped of two heads and wearing a red bow, to guard his new little believer as a puppy named Pippy. The hellhound speaks to her and drives off intruders. When bullying escalates, Satan manifests as a colossal shadow to hurl the cruel children away, violating infernal law and suffering grievous wounds from black lightning. Poppy senses her unseen protector, shovels snow, drags home a crooked tree, and sends a whispered recording back with Cerberus. Satan replays it obsessively in his great hall, his heart softening. Then authorities arrive to place her in an orphanage. Ignoring unhealed injuries, he appears as Lucifer Morningstar and adopts her. On Christmas Day, she wishes to see her parents once more. Lucifer storms Heaven, battling angels and scorched by holy light, to retrieve their souls for her. In a dream, her mother tells her he brought them home.
